The record arrived just as "Louie Louie" was becoming a national phenomenon, turning the Kingsmen's raw Northwest dance-band sound into a full-length album.
The Kingsmen in Person was released by Wand Records in December 1963, with mono and stereo editions carrying catalog numbers WDM 657 and WDS 657.
The original LP contains 12 tracks, opening with "Louie Louie" and ending with "Mashed Potatoes."
The album was presented as a live recording from The Chase, a teen dance club in Portland, Oregon.
The Kingsmen's "Louie Louie" was already becoming a national phenomenon when the album arrived and ultimately reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The track list mixes Kingsmen material with versions of songs including "Fever," "Money," "Twist & Shout" and "Night Train."
Some original pressings incorrectly credit "Fever" to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller even though the song was written by Eddie Cooley and Otis Blackwell.
The Kingsmen in Person reached No. 20 on the Billboard album chart, turning a chaotic garage-rock single into a full-length commercial breakthrough.
